A couple sit on Arthur's Seat with a view of Edinburgh at dusk.

First Steps…

… by Jasmine / from Devon, England / studying German & Linguistics / 1st year

Although I am new to the University of Edinburgh, this is what I have had in my sights for so long. Now I am here, I have already met such an array of amazing, talented people from across the world and been made to feel so welcome!

I grew up in Devon and attended a small all-girls school so the move to a big city with thousands of students did seem daunting. However, I chose Edinburgh due to the flexibility of the course. I love languages but found it so hard to know what to study. Edinburgh was one of the few Universities in the country that offered a joint Linguistics degree with German from scratch. Alongside this I was also able to choose a third subject and am enjoying being able to also pursue my interest of History. It was this scope and the stunning city that really attracted me and meant Edinburgh was my first choice. A four year degree also interested me as it will allow so much depth for studies and means that when I come back from a year abroad, my friends will still be here to graduate together!

Coming to Edinburgh I did have my worries of missing home and adjusting. My initial experience of the University has been a busy one but I already feel I have grown so much as a person. In Welcome Week there are so many events organised by the Student’s Union so every opportunity to make friends was put out there. I received such a warm welcome from my accommodation, advice place and the Principle’s welcoming ceremony felt so special. I did spend the first two weeks with google maps constantly in my hand but I soon got to know my way around. I love the outdoors and walking up Arthur’s seat or going to Princes Street all lit up in the evening have been highlights. There is so much to do and I feel that I will never outgrow this city during my time here.

In terms of societies, I have tried to throw myself into things and the fresher’s fairs helped with that, along with the free pizza! I have already co-written an article for the Student Newspaper and have made a sailing team which has meant trips to a beautiful loch, friends in all years and socials! I also hope to join the UOTC (Universities Officers’ Training Corps) soon.
