Week 1

After the initial feedback from Review 1,  I have further developed my theme and I am thinking of focusing on creating an exhibition showcasing the history of interior design. Creating a space to celebrate the contribution of design to the world. And to demonstrate how society shapes the way design is developed. Even with our local museum I do identify that there is no focus on the design aspect in any of the exhibitions or museums, I think this would be very beneficial to the city for students like me, but also people of all ages who have an interest in design and the arts. I feel like this more closely relates to my dissertation and at the same time it challenges me as this would be the first time I am designing a space for this type of use.

I have continued to research what it really entails to design an exhibition and have looked further into museum design. I am finding it very interesting and want to gain more knowledge on it.

Some case studies I will research further are:

Museum of the Home in London

Museum of Design in London

I will also visit the local museums and galleries here in Edinburgh during the weekend and while visiting think about if this is really the function and type of space I want to be working for my final project.

Potential Buildings

During Thursday’s class the two buildings that caught my interest were the Drill Hall in Leith and the McDonald Road Fire  Station.

Drill Hall: I really liked the location of the building, I think it will be very suitable for a design exhibition as the area is all about diverse culture. The amount of natural light it receives was also a positive. Though my initiall thoughts when walking into the space is that it would be more suitable for a community center type of space.

McDonald Road Fire Station: I found that the way the bilding is shaped it could function very well for a timeline theme exhibition that brings the visitor through a journey. I was looking for a building with historical elements so that could be emphasized in my design but this building does not have those qualities.
