Ordinary Artefacts: Resolved Work

For a resolved work I focused on creating a series of blocks that capture the umbrella in its middle stage before opening fully, and also capturing it in a broken disheveled stage. I went out to the park to capture the blocks in different places to embody the a everyday assurance of walking and having an umbrella that then breaks or fly’s aways even. Often people just bin there umbrellas during the walks when they break however if super windy even the ones that made it to the bin can end up flying around broken. The aim with these was to create a series if I has the resources and place them in clusters around outside places where people usually gather/walk and can experience the struggle of a fragile umbrella breaking apart. The useless object then being immortalised through plaster and cement. These also where smaller then I planed as the bigger one I did with cement is still trying – taking much more time then expected.

I also found this spot as you walked near the side gate that was visible from all paths, making it the prefect place to put this cement piece and see people react to it, ranging from confusion to just a quick glance as some stoped to stare while other couldn’t care less about this broken discarded and then almost fossil umbrella. I took some quick videos to capture the way people might see it as they walk through these gates and onto these various paths.

Other Plaster Locations:

I also included all these other locations that captured more details and overall zoomed in more to the piece rather then include more location. I wanted to show the details, folds and bends of the materials through the pouring of plaster around and into the object. These photos gave a hint to location while still capturing the delicate quality of the work thats reflected in the details.

Interaction with Plaster Work:

I also wanted to do a quick interactive exploration by using myself in these photos to grab, pull and try to lift the umbrae by ether handle with no success as the plaster dragged it down with weight. These photos also show the size not just in realisation to the surrounding environment but in relation to me too. I think these were interesting to see and if I achieved making multiples I would want to see how more impactful there would be on the people visiting the park or other places even. I would wasn’t to see how people lift and hold this new object as the way you would usually is not doable anymore.
