textiles project 2: project brief and clientele

For our textiles project 2, I’ve been doing research on the client that our project is hypothetically made for.

Smith and Nephew, are a company that provide a range of products and treatments for wound management and sports medicine, the range also aims to get closer to zero human and economic consequences. Our project will be specifically looking at burn management, to create a design that will cover burns and scars. What I find specifically interesting about Smith and Nephew is their commitment to sustainability and to providing help for everyone that needs it.

The way that they are focused on reducing their carbon footprint, by reducing water waste and emissions, is inspiring and makes me them more attractive as a company to me than others which care less about their environmental impact.

Our project will also be hypothetically in collaboration with Loop.PH, a London based design company which uses new technologies to create immersive installations that help the audiences well-being.

Their projects and installations are particularly beautiful, I especially like this one The Chronarium, which was installed in The Cathay in Singapore in 2015. The aim was to create a safe space that the public would go into to reset their internal circadian rhythm, so as to help with your sleep in general. This was put into affect by using technologies to create a soothing experience, one would go in and lie down in the hammocks, and there would be an array of lights and soothing sounds. From recent experiences of insomnia, I relate to this installation a lot, and would love to actually be able to go inside it and experience it for myself. It looks so calming, and could almost be described as womb like.

Another piece by Loop.PH is this installation called The Wind Report. Loop.PH first designed a wall that shields the space from electromagnetic fields, meaning that WiFi and mobile phones don’t work near the space, this is called a faraday curtain. they then designed this piece which is made from discarded computer screens. The shapes and formations create a weather rose, and change in accordance with the weather reports from the four airports in Paris.

The shapes of the panels themselves aren’t particularly interesting to look at alone, but when they are put together they create a beautiful pattern, which conveys a certain imagery that is reminiscent of wind mills.
