My Bachelor’s degree is environmental engineering. When I was an undergraduate, I learned how to deal with solid, liquid and gas pollutants in detail. Unfortunately, engineers can only deal with pollutants in an extremely limited way. Moreover, there are no enough funds to support the newly emerging bio-chemical treatments’ experiments. In schools, teachers impart the existing treatment and students recite the existing treatments to complete their examination. As the industrial detreatment process being harmful to physical and mental health, students tend to work far away from garbage disposal plants, such as becoming civil servants of the Environmental Protection Bureau. However, most of the time, these servants just keep naming pollutants, enacting new environmental laws and monitoring pollutant emissions. This is not effective to  pollution problems, especially when the enterprises as the executive party usually cover up the excessive pollutant concentration with large dose of chemical drugs once leaders go here to checks.

During my undergraduate study, I believed people should avoid making pollutants from the source rather than naming and dealing with the exist pollution. This is one of the reasons why I decided to change my major. One fetal  problem here is that we ignored the whole cycle of “cradle to grave” in our undergraduate study. When I was an undergraduate, I learned how to decompose products, and then I thought that design only need to learn how to make products, including materials. Obviously, the current laboratory research on pollutant treatments is far behind the speed of emerging commodities. This is a systematic problem. We can’t simply consider “decomposition” (my undergraduate major) or manufacturing (the orginal design field). The key things to be considered are material and biological. In terms of materials, we should consider the way of using local materials to maintain the sustainability of material circulation, and in therms of biological, we need to focus on bio-diversity  as well as on-going creation for human civilization. Here comes my first question, where does the materials of my meal come from?
