Mother and Child (Divided)
Hirst’s ‘Mother and Child (Divided)’, Comprises of both a cow and calf split into two halves (divided), preserved in formaldehyde and displayed in boxes made from steel and glass. The halves of each of the animals are separated so that the onlooker may walk through them and view their cross-sections.
found object, the object being cow
to take the mundane and almost pervert it
Using presentation to create a mood
discomfort caused bc living thing now preserved
v unnatural
prevented rot- undoing of regular biological processes
all life removed-now just object
found object or made into object?
viewing from a new perspective-the perspective being inside
response to Hirst’s piece-cut open some froot!!!!!!!1 possibly a veg
Bisect objects and separate so that both inside and outside are visible as one
photograph and sketch
use pane of glass to get cross sections?
Away from the Flock
Glass and steel box displaying sheep preserved in formaldehyde
is only art once Hirst presents it as such
or are sheep art?…no
title: ‘Away from the Flock’, creates feeling of isolation in the witness of piece. Sheep is forever separated from its flock by glass panes
Primary Research:
In Response to Hirst’s piece ‘Mother and Child (Divided)’ i wanted to explore the idea of being ale to see the the inside and the outside of an object that you wouldn’t usually be able to simultaneously.
I divided my milk carton down the middle using a craft knife and then began to arrange each half and photograph/sketch the compositions so that both the outside and inside could be seen.
developing this further I would probably move into different objects in which the interior and exterior and more contrasting.
