‘No studio? No problem!’ – Emma Lake

Working from home and the lack of studio access has meant many of us have had to adapt our practice to the new ‘home studio’ environment. For me, this has meant adapting my usual practice to smaller scale work. Instead of focusing on blacksmithing techniques, using the workshops forge, MIG welder and various other  tools, I adapted my practise to using thing brass tubing, a blowtorch and some solder. This mimicked the idea of using hot forging techniques but in a way adaptable to my home setting.

First I used modelling wire to create a set of legs for several small plant pots. Then I recreated this with thin brass tubing, soldering each leg onto a circle which the base of the pot sits (this method was much more stable than my initial trial where the pot balanced on the legs). I shall continue to use these techniques as ideas and planning of larger projects (or in some cases, instead of large projects depending on space restrictions).
