‘Art is like and illness, like an allergy you have to live with in life’
Archie Brennan, Scottish weaver, inspirational artist. The weaver maintained a very casual and spontaneous relationship with his work. I hope to achieve this relaxed manner of interaction with my own work one day. Great documentary to find motivation, something difficult to find these days.
NOTES:
-Physicality of weaving
-His father was a crafter. He finished high school and went straight to a weaving apprenticeship
-Weaves images of EVERYDAY SITUATIONS. Gives sense of COMFORT and WARMTH
-Also weaves every day images that are formally intriguing.
-THINKS TAPESTRY AS A SOCIAL DOCUMENT. Comes from the way tapestry was used as political weapon during the 16th C (when most people did not know how to read)
-PERSONAL CONNECTION TO WORK, ARBITRARY THEME. Pop-art concept of not distinguishing ‘high’ and ‘low’ art.
