Scenario : Sprint 4

I have created and licenced an Open Toolkit for Artistic Learning. I’d like to organise a public event within which to present and run this Open Toolkit that will attract like-minded peers. I’ve heard that “unconferences” are ways of organising such participatory events, but I’m not sure what unconferences are, or how to find out about them. It all seems so daunting. Where should I start?

Pre-Sprint: Assignment ahead of your first class

What a BarCamp? FISh model of Collective Inquiry into Unconferences

You will use the FISh model of Collective Inquiry to quickly gain a working understanding of Unconference formats such as BarCamps.

FISh stands for Focus > Investigate > Share

Before you meet to work in your Basho, you must all do the following:

Focus: Find out what a Baramp is. How are they organised? What are the ‘rules’ of a BarCamp?

Investigate: What other sort of Unconference formats are there are there and how do they work?

When we meet for the first workshop, you will Share: Pool and share your BarCamp Research

Focus > Investigate = Swarm Reading

What are you going to focus on, what will you investigate?

You will use the swarm reading model to distribute the labour involved in researching BarCamps. You can read about how to use this model here: swarm reading (link).

Focus, Investigate, Share

Each student will give a 5min presentation on the reading resource they were assigned during – BarCamp 101 – your first class on Tuesday.

So, you need to share your Research in preparation for – Barcamp 101.

Your Basho’s Miro board has a space for sharing your thoughts on the reading resource assigned to you.

Ensure that you make notes in this board so that you can present your findings to your peers on Tuesday.

Barcamp 101

From today, you seven days to learn about BarCamps and to create one.

First thing today, we will use the FISh model of Collective Inquiry to gain an understanding of Barcamps.

Working in your Basho, you will be doing the following:

Share: Meeting with your Basho to present and discuss your BarCamp Research.

Each student will give a 5min presentation on the reading resource they were assigned. We will hear all the presentations before we have a discussion about the rules of BarCamp.

We will be working in your Basho’s Miro board. It’s important that you have used the Miro board to share your thoughts on the reading resource assigned to you.

Ensure that you make notes in this board so that you can present your findings to your peers on Tuesday.

BarCamp Infra/structure Design and Programme Publication

11:30-12:30

By way of an induction to the final Sprint in this course, we will use the remaining hour today to examine the Sprint 4 Scenario in more detail.

The final Scenario outlines what you have to to do for your summative assignment.

To clarify what is required, we will look at two essential components of collectivised planning:

Swarm designing your BarCamp’s infrastructure to support each Open Toolkit
Swarm Drafting your Basho’s BarCamp Programme for Publication

Each Basho will meet independently today to design and develop your Basho’s BarCamp Programme.

There are two components to this:

BarCamp infra/structure design

The design of your BarCamp’s infrastructure will determine the success of each Open Toolkit. (see: Ten Rules for your Basho’s BarCamp for info on what you need to work on here).

Please complete your own Open Toolkit plan within your Basho’s Miro Board to ensure that you have the your own infrastructure information in place.

You will need to carefully plan and organise all of the resources needed for each CAT in your Basho ahead of the event on Thursday 1st December 2022 at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

This means focusing on how you will design the BarCamp site (the Sculpture Yard of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop). When considering how to use this site, it helps to do so in situ, so you might want to have this meeting at ESW.

Draft for Programme Publication

You must publicise your Basho’s BarCamp Programme.

This will include all information on each Open Toolkit contribution from all MA CATs in your Basho.

Please complete your own Open Toolkit plan within your Basho’s Miro Board to ensure that you have the draft programme information in place.

You will use this information to carefully design the BarCamp timetable as it will run on Thursday 1st December 2022 at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

Week 8 or 9

1:1 Open Toolkit Tutorial

In Week 8 or 9 you will have a tutorial with your Basho’s tutor.

This tutorial will support you in creating, licensing (OER), presenting and distributing your modifiable Open Toolkit for Artistic Learning as part of your Basho’s BarCamp Programme.

Before you come for your tutorial can you please create an outline of the 20mins Open Toolkit you plan to run at ESW.

As you know already, there a space in Miro for sketching out your Open Toolkit – you must use this to board to outline what you are planning to do. This will enable all of your peers in your Basho to see what each other are planning – vital for the organisation of your Basho’s BarCamp.

Please make sure you complete your draft of your 20mins Open Toolkit before this tutorial.

Week 9

BarCamp Programming Meeting 2 (with your Tutor)

Tuesday 15th November 2022 | 1.03, 7-8 Chambers Street, Central (link to timetable)

BarCamp infra/structure design

10:00-10:50 Each CAT will give a 5min presentation on their Open Toolkit.

11:00-11:45 Each Basho will then walk through the design of your BarCamp’s infrastructure plan and clarify how it will determine the success of each Open Toolkit ahead of the BarCamp public event on Thursday 1st December 2022 at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

Final Copy of Programme Publication

11:45-12:30

Staff will spend remaining time this morning working with their Basho to ensure that the Barcamp programme is populated and ready for publication.

This will include all information on each Open Toolkit contribution by each CAT in your Basho.

You will need to carefully design the BarCamp timetable as it will run on Thursday 1st December 2022 at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

Please ensure that you update your own Open Toolkit plan within your Basho’s Miro Board to ensure that you have the final copy of the programme information in place.

Copy-editing will be started before the end of today’s class.

Week 9 Sprint 4 | 500 word Blogpost

Due Friday 18th November 2022 | Post in your Portfolio (link). LEARN > Portfolio (WordPress Student Tool).

For your final 500 word blogpost, you should write some friendly ‘how-to’ advice for the Scenario’s character:

Begin by addressing their key concern (i.e. their anxiety: ‘Where should I start?’).

You should try to draw on your own experience here. Given what you know now, what would you do?

If you wish, you can write out a set of ‘rules’. If you want to modify some existing rules, you can do so provided you fully cite all of your sources.

Week 11 BarCamp Assignment

BarCamp takes place Thursday 1st December at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop

Create, licence, present and distribute your own modifiable Open Toolkit for Artistic Learning as part of a BarCamp programmed by your Basho. Working with your Basho, collaboratively research unconference formats, collectively create a viable BarCamp infrastructure, publicise your Basho’s BarCamp Programme on Friday 25th November 5pm, and run it on Thursday 1st December 2022 at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.
