Miro

The CAT programme makes fairly extensive use of Miro.

Each Course in each Semester of the MA CAT will have its own Miro e-whiteboard.

Miro is built-in to our main virtual learning environment LEARN. Normally, when we work with Miro, the e-whiteboards that we use are accessible in LEARN and you are automatically enrolled in them.

What is Miro and how do we use it?

Miro is, basically, a whiteboard that you use online. It has many bells and whistles that real whiteboards can’t have. You can scribble on it, rub out your scribbles and rewrite, just like on a real whiteboard. You can also add post-it notes, video, images, files, etc.

The main advantage for you is that you, and your peers, can access it from anywhere.

We are going to use Miro because it allows us to scribble, erase and re-scribble as a group over distance and time.

To start with, for example, you will use it to develop your own Basho’s Covenant in the Open Learning course.

Setting up a free Miro Education Account

To get used to the Miro e-whiteboard, you will need a Miro account. This is something that will automatically kick-in when we use Miro in LEARN.

Before you officially start on the 14th of September 2021, however, you will need to establish a Miro sandbox that you can use to play with . To do this, you will need to set up a (free) student Miro account. You will be able to keep this for two years and can use it to complete some of your coursework. To set this up, follow this link Educational Account (link). Remember the account is free – do not pay for a subscription!

If you have your UNN (the matriculation number starting with S1234567) then you have your University of Edinburgh email address (it will be SXXXXXXXX@ed.ac.uk). Try to use this to sign up for your Miro Educational Account. If you can’t figure out what your UNN is, I can tell you.

If you have an iOS or Android device, it has an app (but you don’t need the app, it works in any web browser).

Who we are; what we Value (link)

The best way to learn Miro is to just start using it right away!

Before we all meet for the first time in person, I’d like you all to complete a short online “e-tivity” that involves introducing yourself by way of a useful overview of five key factors that shape the artworld. The e-tivity is called Who we are; what we Value. To do this, you need to follow a course in Miro – an electronic whiteboard.

Once you have a Miro Educational Account you can start the e-tivity by following this link:

Password: check MS Teams for the password

Do you best to work your way through. If you have any questions, post them to the Miro board, or into MS Teams, and I will pick them up there!
