Part-time work in 2021 – How we can help

Thanks to Tom Robinson, Careers Information Adviser, for this update on part-time work.

It’s almost 12 months since the first UK-wide lockdown and what an extremely challenging time this has been! Almost everything feels like it has been turned upside down, ground to a halt or been put on hold; not least part-time employment for many of you.

Whether you’re in Edinburgh or much further afield, the Careers Service is here to support you. It may be that you’re looking for something to fill those summer months or perhaps something more immediate. So… keep an eye out over the next few months on Inform.ed and our social media channels for updates and advice on finding part-time work.

What can I do right now?

We have lots of information and advice on looking for part-time work on our website.

The good news is that there are still lots of opportunities being advertised and we’ve highlighted a few at the end of this blog post. Starting on MyCareerHub and then branching out to other sites is often the best strategy. Every part-time job advertised on MyCareerHub is no more than 15 hours a week so it should be possible to fit it around your studies, hobbies or caring responsibilities.

Here are some other suggestions:

  • Search Unitemps at the University of Edinburgh for jobs based within the Information Services Group (ISG).
  • Browse myjobscotland which advertises Scottish local government jobs.
  • Ask around – chat to your friends and find out where they work; ask if they know whether their employer is planning to recruit. Try to get your foot in the door before they open the position!
  • Or, why not take on dog walking, gardening, or childminding in your local area; all of these opportunities can be practical part-time work.

What does the job market look like at the moment?

Most part-time jobs advertised on MyCareerHub have been in:

  • Healthcare
  • Social care
  • Administration
  • Teaching and education

Most of these are entry level and do not require previous work experience.

We have seen more supermarket and retail roles, in both customer service and warehouse support to keep up with the demands for delivery services.

Deliveroo and Uber Eats have thrived during the last few months with demands for takeaway services rising. These jobs can offer flexible hours around your studies.

Why not consider a tutoring role? This can offer structured part-time work for students who understand the Scottish exam system. Tutoring can also be conducted remotely. Remote working helps you build your skills in teamwork, communication and problem solving. Plus, it will demonstrate how adaptable and flexible you are to future employers.

We are also starting to see some hospitality and tourism opportunities being advertised with businesses hopeful of the easing of restrictions in Scotland after April.

Some interesting jobs being advertised on MyCareerHub

  • Need a little extra cash or want a job with flexible hours? Are you outgoing, personable and love a challenge? Give being a games demonstrator a try!
  • Do you want a flexible job that can be done in the comfort of your own home? Give being a transcriber a go!
  • Interested in working in social media? Why not try working with influencers and content creators!
  • Know a thing or two about Roblox or Minecraft? Have a look at this tutoring job!

Thanks Tom.
